In her post-match interview, U.S. Open runner-up Caroline Wozniacki congratulated “bestie” Serena Williams for her 6-3, 6-3 victory, which earned her an 18th Grand Slam title. “You’re an unbelievable friend,” Wozniacki said, “and you definitely owe drinks later.”

Arthur Ashe Stadium erupted in laughed, as did Serena, who later confirmed that she would indeed be buying rounds.

Fast-forward to just after midnight, approximately six hours after Williams and Wozniacki cleared the court after the trophy presentation at Arthur Ashe Stadium

Good as their word, there were Serena and Caro, out for a night in New York, as if their match was nothing more than a friendly game between friends down at the public courts. No word on whether Serena picked up the tab, but after winning nearly $5 million with her U.S. Open win, she could afford it, even at those ridiculous Manhattan drink prices.

Serenaline (Willniacki?) didn’t take New York alone. They had apparently forgiven Joe Jonas for the sins of his brother Nick, who warbled an off-key rendition of God Bless America before the match, as one-third of the Jonas Brothers showed up in some pictures too.

Serena knows all about compartmentalizing on-court rivalries with off-court friendships: She’s had the unique experience of playing her sister 25 times in WTA matches, including eight times in Grand Slam finals. After that, playing a friend like Wozniacki is nothing.
